The importance of mental health.

In light of numerous recent tragedies and the slow decline of mental health, I am going to curate a post each day this week. Each post will display the effects that society has on mental health, written by a different person each day. If you would like to contribute to this week's posts about mental health, please feel free so submit any expressive art form - from literature to photography.

We’ve failed as a society. Teaching our youth to prioritize a number, an acceptance letter, over their own physical and mental wellbeing. Teenagers are forced to figure out their future, deciding on their academic pursuits before they even have the chance to discover who they are as a person.

There is no preparation for the real world. Merely memorization of useless facts, of complex math concepts, and analysis of old-English texts. We are never taught stress management. We are never taught how to function as a human being, how to survive. We are only taught to retain information, to memorize vocabulary words.

The system is failing us.

Most children learn to seek academic validation. They define their self-worth on a number, sometimes a letter. Society implies that we must feel worthless if we do not achieve a high score, if the number is not desirable.

The system is failing us.

What exactly is mental health? The dictionary defines it as: “a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.” Mental health. It is a concept that is quite difficult for most to understand. Often, it is characterized by a silent battle, an invisible wound. Mental illness is rarely visibly seen, and because of this, many people disregard silent cries for help.

Be kind to people, you never know what they might be dealing with. You never know what details of their life they could be keeping from you. And check up on your friends, on your peers. One act of kindness could save someone’s life.

- Sincerely, HGK
